I actually thought this one was better than the original. More character development (a much larger cast helped) and a greater total number of people and situations just made it overall more interesting. On top of that it was plenty disturbing, just like the original. |

Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) |
|

My wife doesn’t speak English well enough to really dig into a novel in English. I am sure she would do alright if she had to but the thing is that she isn’t much of a reader in the first place. I bought her a Spanish translation of Memoirs of a Geisha just as soon as it came out though, and she practically devoured it from cover to cover without putting it down.
Finally, I thought, when we went to see Memoirs of a Geisha together, she will understand what I’m talking about when I complain that a movie has failed to capture the essence of the book upon which it was based. Unfortunately for me and lucky for all the rest of us, Rob Marshall appears to have done as well at this as could possibly be expected. |

Evil Breed: the Legend of Samhain (2003) |

Finally someone is applying what appears to some basic logic to the whole low-budget Horror thing. We’re making a movie with terrible actors and a script that could have been written by monkeys (since it was probably mostly ad-libbed anyway) but instead of getting people off the street to act in it we’ll use porn stars. Works for me, and it worked fairly well for this movie too. Remind me to get porn stars when I make my cheap horror movie. |

Better than “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”!
Movies coming out of Australia continue to impress me. Having seen this I am going to have to go back and find a copy of “ICQ”, and earlier work by the same director. (Greg McLean) |

So John Stockwell is asking God what the world really needs and God said, “there needs to be a movie about treasure diving. And it needs to have Jessica Alba in it because we haven’t seen enough underwater bathing suit shots of her” God went on to stipulate that the movie should not encourage drug abuse. |

The Shooting Gallery (2005) |

Well most of the critics have been pretty hard on this one, especially the ones that claim to know a thing or two about shooting pool. Lucky for this movie I have no such handicap and found it just as enjoyable as any other film that deals with a topic I will never care enough about to be able to criticize properly. |

I had a chance to see this yesterday and I have to say it was a great movie. I can’t pretend to know what war vets feel and go through but it can’t be easy, I always have had a soft spot for them and after seeing this even more so. |

Sorry for the lack of updates, I took a break for the holidays folks. (Happy New Year) here are some films I could have done without trying to watch, and couldn’t quite finish (life is too short) |

Best European film I’ve seen in a bit. Kind of amazing how much of Veronika Zemanova there is to see in this film, considering the fact that she is not actually in it. I hope that doesn’t blow the movie for anyone, it really is a great movie, I for one couldn’t find a single cliché in it, and that to me is the wonderfully refreshing thing about European Cinema.

If you are into movies that are green, then this is a great movie for you. Also if you have wondered all your life what separates eroticism from pornography (and you don’t have internet access so you can find out for yourself) then you might learn something. In all honesty this movie does not completely disappoint, it is unfortunately one of the better films in its genre to come out recently. The story is bearable, the dialogue is OK, and the photography is actually pretty good most of the time (although the whole film appears to have been run through some sort of green filter). It’s really the story that makes this film watchable, just intriguing enough to keep your attention despite flaws normally associated with indie gothic horror. And as far as that goes, this film is definitely a cut or two above anything else in its genre. |
