Best European film I’ve seen in a bit. Kind of amazing how much of Veronika Zemanova there is to see in this film, considering the fact that she is not actually in it. I hope that doesn’t blow the movie for anyone, it really is a great movie, I for one couldn’t find a single cliché in it, and that to me is the wonderfully refreshing thing about European Cinema.
Story:
A 30-something year old writer, played by comedian Ed Byrne is plagued by OCD and terribly behind schedule scripting a trashy horror movie when his model girlfriend leaves him. He decides to replace her with the hottest babe on the planet, Veronika Zemanova, or anyone he happens across who looks a little like her, while he plasters his apartment with downloaded images of Zemanova and basically creates a new obsession for himself, of which he already has plenty and which already include locking his apartment door 3-4 times on the way out and carrying on conversations with his fingertips. Interspersed with the story are numerous wonderful still images of Veronika in all her glory, which she has apparently retired from producing, according to a note on this films official website, www.zemanovaload.com. She will be missed.
The Good: This film is really very well made, all budget considerations aside. I don’t know what the film-makers could have done differently with a bigger budget, so I don’t know if it’s fair to call this a low-budget movie. It’s obvious it didn’t break the bank, but then it didn’t have to to make it’s point.
The Bad:If Veroinika had actually made a personal appearance in the film I think that would have been wonderful. I knew she wasn’t going to from the start because I couldn’t find a credit for her in the casting credits, but whatever, it’s not like images and videos of this lady are hard to find anywhere, and it’s still a great movie. Conclusion:Nice refreshing comedy from Europe. |
